By now you must have heard about this GDPR thing. But why is it such a big deal for marketers, advertisers and even meeting, conference and event planners?
Following is some summarized info and its impact on meetings and conferences.
In April 2016, the European Union (EU) Parliament passed expanded regulations under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regarding the collection, transfer and protection of the personal data of all EU citizens. These regulations unify and strengthen data protection for EU citizens, giving them more control over how their personal information is used.
On May 25, 2018, these new rules will take effect in the European Union (EU). All organizations need to comply with these new regulations or risk being fined. Here is the kicker: the General Data Protection Regulation applies to organizations no matter where they are located in the world!
And that’s why it is such a big deal: It will change the way you will collect and protect the information of attendees from the EU. It doesn’t matter where the conference or event is being held. If you will or ever had an attendee from Europe, you will be affected by these new rules.
There is a lot of helpful information online and what steps need to be taken to be in compliance with the new data rules. Please see a few links below that I found helpful navigating the waters.
